T-Town Tuesday: Five

The most chic addition to Tuscaloosa's restaurant scene is 5, located in the downtown area next to Catch 22 and the Shirt Shop.  The restaurant concept of 5 is to simplify the diner's experience.  Each night, the restaurant features only five entrees.  The advantage of this minimalism?  A focus on quality food.  No matter the choice, the food you receive at 5 will be delicious.
Entrees range in price from $12 to $24; however, portions are very generous.  Expect to take left-overs home from an entree.  Appetizers, or snacks, are reasonably priced, between $5-6; a petite meal could certainly be made from the purchase of two snacks.  Favorites include the Bone-In Pork Chop and Fried Olives.  Additionally, 5 presents innovative signature cocktails for diners of the legal drinking age.
The atmosphere of 5 is warm and eclectic.  The new restaurant is part of an ongoing restoration of the older commercial buildings along Sixth Street between Greensboro and 23rd Avenue. The restaurant's building dates to 1904, which helps to create 5's interesting ambiance.  According to a story in the Tuscaloosa News, the restoration and redecoration of 5 cost around $300,000.  The owners of 5 visited various restaurant in New York to gather ideas for the creation of the restaurant.  Be warned -- this atmosphere lends itself to a slow pace, so be prepared to spend at least an hour at dinner.  This is the type of place to spend the evening catching up with friends or parents from out of town; it does not provide the typical get-in, get-out service that a college student expects.
5 presents a dining experience not duplicated in Tuscaloosa.  If you're in the mood for a change in pace, a captivating yet relaxing atmosphere, and delectable American cuisine, give 5 a try.  The restaurant is open for business 5 PM to 2 AM for dinner and drinks with an extra service of Sunday jazz brunch from 11 AM to 3 PM on Sundays.
